By far the most unconventional return experience. Small mini-mart (AMB Market) on the NE corner of E. 7th Street and San Julian in downtown LA. Very depressed area with many homeless people and their assorted tents. The small back storage lot had a few U-Haul trucks of different lengths. I pulled in around 4:30 PM and parked. There was no attendant. There was no other equipment. There was no security. Interesting. If I had not seen the other trucks, I would not ever have imagined that this was a U-Haul drop-off location. There were no open exterior doors to the inside so I called through a metal screen to see if anyone was there. Finally, a lone voice said to come around to the front of the store. So I navigated my way up San Julian and entered the store on 7th Street. There were a couple of people in line buying a few items. I noticed there was a window at the rear of the store with an orange U-Haul sign above. Even though this U-Haul location was supposed to be open until 5 PM on Sunday, the window was closed. The male cashier requested that I hand him the key which I did. He just said he would "email me". Strange. He did not bother to check the mileage, the gas gauge, the condition of the truck, my contract, or make any notes as to when I returned the truck. When I inquired, he said not to worry about it because he would, "email me". Now, I'm not sure if he had his hands full with ringing up the grocery items for his customers, or if the regular U-Haul person had just left and asked the cashier to collect the key and to reply that he would, "email me" to any my questions. At any rate, he had no time for me so I left the key with him and made my way home. Later, I called customer service to check to see if their records showed that I had returned the truck. They said not yet but they would email the store for confirmation. I shared this story with them, let them know the final mileage amount, and asked them to keep me updated on their efforts to reach the store and receive confirmation. Crickets. Finally, Monday mid-afternoon, I received an email with my U-Haul Equipment Contract statement. Everything appears to be in order. Now, I don't know when the last time someone from U-Haul corporate walked on down to the AMB Market at the corner of E. 7th Street and San Julian in LA, but I'm guessing this location might not be the best image U-Haul would like to project to their customers. I have used U-Haul several times over the years with no complaints whatsoever. However, this experience has surely showed me a side of U-Haul that may have been better left hidden.

This location is very poorly serviced, the owner is rude and unprofessional. The truck was really dirty! The area is very unsafe, surrounded by homeless people. People arguing right in the store. Horrible experience. Never again

This was by far the sketchiest U-Haul location I've ever seen. First off it's in the back of a shady looking convenience store. We found it by the crooked U-Haul sign hanging off the bottom of the front door. Then in a back room is a dirty desk, receipts and trash on the floor, a hookah in the center of the room, dirty laundry in the corner, security DVR hanging haphazardly from it's cables on the wall. Seemed everywhere we looked there was yet another example of the utter lack of any sort of care, cleanliness or professionalism. The employee acted like they had never rented a vehicle before, and had to get two other people to help them. When we got the truck the fuel level was not where they said it should be. Though looking at it, we determined they read the gas meter from the side of the truck and not directly on as you would were you actually sitting in the truck. They used the same method when we returned the truck (as we only drove it a total of 4 miles) so we didn't get charged for gas that was never in the truck. The truck itself was fine. However I would not recommend this location in any way.

The drop-off fine and friend but an absolute dump in the middle of skid row with homeless people camped around facility. I thought I was in India. Also packing was sent to my location in LA and I had to take it back to U-haul since I flew to Portland to get the truck. OK value. R

This location is on Skid Row in Los Angeles - not really the fault of AMB market - but definitely not a place to go for my mom!

This was one of the worst experiences of my life. There was no record of my rental, even with my confirmation number. It took over an hour for the jokers at the store to figure out what was going on, then I was told there were no trucks because one of the employees had his personal effects in the back of the cab. I then had to wait while said employee removed his personal items from the back of the truck (mattress, bedding, chairs, dressers, etc - I took photos!). I was then told there was no dolly or furnipads, despite my reservation, which meant I had to personally carry 65 boxes, by hand, one at a time, which took all day, and injured my shoulder in the process. I was then charged for the items I didn't receive, and the gas I put back in the truck! I'm going to leave a very honest yelp review, and in addition, I would appreciate a full refund for the disaster that was renting form this downtown uHaul.

Really shady spot. They didn’t have what I had reserved online. I took the truck anyway just to get me out of the place. I would compare this place to a Walgreens for homeless people. It was rough. I would never take my family there.

This is a dump of a Uhaul. I literally am switching to Avon for rentals from now on. This location is supposed to offer 24 hour pickup, and it doesn't. Its in a horrible part of town, in a liquor store. The person was an hour late to even open up the window which threw my entire day off. Absolutely absurd that this location even exists.

The reservation associate was smoking hookah throughout the whole encounter, and had a very poor understanding of the U Haul system. It took nearly 20 minutes just to fill out the pickup forms, because he kept mistyping and messing it up - including putting 40 days as my estimated usage, rather than 40 miles. He had to call his boss, and still couldn't get an accurate estimate onto the reservation. When I returned the van, I asked about whether I needed to fill out any return forms, or have the mileage checked. The attendant said, "Nah, you're good, I got you on camera. You get outta here." Two days later, I got a receipt via email charging me for 2 days of service, not the two hours I had actually used it for. Now, a week later, the charge still hasn't been refunded, despite calls and emails with this UHaul location, and UHaul customer service.

Wow! What awful service. Definitely using penske next time I move. Not only was the guy not there when I went to pick my truck up, but I had to wait a half an hour to find out that he had no idea what my reservation was. Then they made me a new reservation over the phone while hurriedly pushing me out the door. At the end, the guy said I could drop it off at another U-Haul. I problem. Which turned out to not be true! I called ahead to make sure it was fine to bring it to a different location, they said. So, I drove it there, dropped it off and everything seemed fine, until the uhaul rep called me an hour later saying I had to come back and pick the truck up to move it to a different location !!! What???? I asked if we could figure something else out, they said they would call me back. That was 2 days ago! No call, no word. Nothing. And now I get a receipt for almost twice as much as my initial reservation???? What the hell happened??? Please call me about this, I need a refund and an apology pronto!

owner is solid.. employees are completely insane... the location is like Dantes Inferno - it's hell on Earth. human feces... smells... trash everywhere... employees hand the phone to u and request you speak w the owner... employee smoking a hookah and drinking a Redbull unable to speak English... pure mayhem and careful where you step. This location was absolutely horrible. Not a good area at all and you should warn people that this location is in the heart of skid row. Nothing but homeless people everywhere. I did not feel safe or comfortable at all while I was there. The UHual woman was not even present she did the transaction over the phone and some other people working in the store handed me the keys and didn't know what he was doing at all. Horrible, horrible experience.
