I have rented from U-Haul several times over the past year or so and I have had no issues at all and have been complimentary of my experiences. But this time was different and I am pretty disappointed and frustrated. I asked the lady at Oakley Motorsports if it would be cheaper for me to rent in Owensboro (KY) and drop off the truck in Oak Grove (KY) which is about 85 miles or would it be cheaper for me to return the truck Owensboro. She made a phone call but got no answer and stated that she had answered that question for another client recently and was pretty sure it would be cheaper to return it to Owensboro. I explained to her that at $.99/mile, the 85 mile return trip plus gas would go a long way to covering the one-way rental. She didn't respond and went ahead and made the contract for the Owensboro return of the truck. I called U-Haul customer service on Saturday morning and they told me that it would be considerably cheaper to take the one-way trip and leave the truck in Oak Grove. She also told me that since I had already signed the contract, the only way it could be changed would be to physically return to the rental location and change the contract. I called the dealer several times before we had to leave for Oak Grove but did not get an answer. I was stuck with the higher cost because I was misled at the time of rental. We were moving my son's items back to the Ft. Campbell area where he is stationed in the US Army and has just returned from deployment in Iraq. If there is anything that can be done to reduce the cost for us and our son, I would appreciate it greatly and it would do a lot to restore my confidence in and satisfaction with U-Haul. At this point, the next time I need a rental truck or trailer, I will shop elsewhere.
