You can make it clear, upon confirming the rental online, that it is necessary to download the app and that it will be needed to rent the vehicle. Maybe send an email with the instructional video of how to rent at a location that doesn't have an attendant. It was a shitty thing to have to figure out while standing in an empty unattended parking lot, wishing that I was already in the vehicle on my way to my destination. A big sign at the door, telling people that the confirmation email that they received is useless because they are going to have to go through half of the rental process all over again, in the app, before they can get the keys to the vehicle, would be nice. I left that parking lot after half an hour of frustration and confusion and two conversations with two remote customer service attendants. The website was also useless in giving me the information that I needed. It kept confirming that my rental was ready with no indication that I needed to do anything else to complete the process. Now that I know, I don't suspect I'll have a problem in the future, but my experience was very stressful because I didn't give myself enough time to deal with the mystery that the situation dragged me through.

Terrible. Intercom is timed so when I could get a hold of customer service, the intercom hung up on them. General manager never called me back, even though he was listed as the after hours number to call. Customer service took 40 minutes to get a hold of after being placed on hold. Checking out a vehicle is unnecessarily complex. Never using uHaul again nor would I recommend it to anyone.
