Disappointing, frustrating, inefficient, wasteful business transaction/experience. U-Haul changed arbitrarily my reservation many times to suit itself and disregarded completely the agreed times, pickup location and drop off location. U-Haul's inconsiderate, self serving actions compelled me to drive 70 miles out of my way to pick up the car dolly. For returning equipment, compelled me to drive past my neighborhood U-Haul dealer and drive 42 miles round trip out of my way to a decrepit, primitive, disgusting of place of business that should never represent a national brand. Total miles driven to accommodate U-Haul's arbitrary, inefficient, customer hostile procedures, 112 miles. Every telephone call declares..."recording this conversation to keep our promises" .... WHAT a joke! What a delusion that recording a phone call and disregarding the most basic instructions of the customer and abrogating the agreement promotes efficiency, loyalty and goodwill. Scores for customer support ZERO; reducing carbon footprint... ZERO; promoting sustainability ZERO; promoting overall business efficiency/effectiveness ZERO; promoting loyalty.. ZERO. U-IDIOTS!

ada D.I had an amazing experience at this uhaul center, the truck was super nice and clean and ran great! The staff members were really nice. Only thing that I'd suggest is not making it up to the customer to make sure the gas and mileage is correct. When I got into the truck the gas was at 3/4 til empty and it was marked to be at almost 1/8 full. I was in a huge hurry and running very late that day my phone was dying and I didn't get a chance to get pictures so I ended up taking the loss and paying for the extra gas that wasn't in there to begin with. I also had trouble with the app, it didn't register that I had a rental out. But overall I had a really great experience especially getting it last minute and having to extend my time.

Doug D.This location is EXTREMELY understaffed. I booked a cargo van for one day to move a desk that I had bought, and when I went to pick it up I tried going through the mobile checkout process. Once I started that, U-Haul's system told me that a van had not been assigned to my reservation, even though the system gave me a "reservation guarantee" through the process and even though there was clearly a cargo van sitting in the parking lot. I asked the one staff member that was working there for help, and although he was nice and helpful, he made no attempt to look at the online system on his end and try to figure out what happened. He just said, "I don't know what to tell you, we don't have any vans." I then called the U-Haul customer service line and they switched my reservation to a 15' truck for the same price as the cargo van and gave me a $50 refund for the "reservation guarantee." As I was checking the truck out via the mobile process, the staff member at this location eventually came out after he was done helping other customers to see if I needed anything. He then saw the cargo van sitting there and said to me, "Oh, why didn't you tell me there was a van out here?" 1) Shouldn't that be something you know? Or, at the very least are able to find out by checking the reservation system to see if a van had been checked back in??? 2) How am I supposed to know if that van was available for me to take or not? For all I know, it could have been reserved by somebody else. I have to go off the word of the staff member in front of me (who, again, is a perfectly nice dude but who is also making zero attempts to check anything in the store's system). Very disappointing and frustrating process.

doug D.Successfully scheduled and paid for everything online, and was reached out to confirming dates and times available by the manager. While dropping off my vehicle, I got a sense walking in and working with some of the staff that there was much needed training for a smoother operation. The rep I worked with didn't ask for my name, nor looked up my information, I instead had to write down my name and phone number on a sticky note and provided my keys, hoping it would get to the right person. The next day I did receive a call that my vehicle was ready by the manager I spoke with before, and he did apologize for how long it took as there was an issue at the facility that needed to be attended to. I arrived to pick up my vehicle with no manager in site and I worked with a rep who once again needed a lot of training, or at least needed to have someone shadow him while working. There was at least 3 times where he had to FaceTime the manager to confirm information for just my request, and while I appreciate him being thorough, with all due respect that's not how operations should be handled. I was honestly and still am scared if my hitch installation is going to be successful based on the way I saw how things were operating. The staff was all very friendly, but again, training can go a long way into changing things around.

I knew I only drove 15 miles. The odometer showed I went 44 and was charged. Also, the gas hand did not match. My loss this time, but I will not get caught again. My generosity in helping cost me because I did not compare the paperwork I trusted someone else.

Spent a lot of time over many months trying to get them to fix the problem. New management came on board about two months ago and he helped me. He was helpful but up until his artival I was not getting any service. However, records are still wrong and I continue to get past due notices and extra charges. I moved out on November 26 and I see this survey says December 6. I put everything in a PODS unit which was picked up at uhaul on 11-27 and shipped to texas. Clearly U-Haul has a problem with book keeping practices.

Uhaul is great at telling you to drive an extra 40 minutes to pick up a truck even though you reserved one at a different location. Then, they might not let you drop it off at your RESERVED location, instead asking you to drive even further, pay for more miles and gas, to return the truck to a different location on the day you're MOVING, which is the whole point of getting a uhaul. Y'all need to redo your system, seriously frustrating stuff. The employees at the Ames store were VERY kind and helpful, however

I have towed things with my vehicle before, and own all of the proper hitch accessories, etc but I could not find them this time. I was sold what I needed at an affordable price and without any kind of deceptive sales techniques. While he was hooking up my trailer, I inquired with the man helping me about the nearby UHaul storage units. He knew everything I needed to know off the top of his head! A different, but also very kind, man greeted me when I returned the trailer. It was an excellent experience overall. To secure a unit for sure I wound up renting it 2 weeks before actually needing it and then renting an extra month without the ability to get a pro-rated refund. Disappointing.

Lighting is in the hallways of the storage unit, not in the units themselves. This was extremely frustrating because they are set on a timer and are motion controlled. So when I was working in the unit and the lights went off I would have to work my way out of the unit and then run and dance around until the lights came on again. Other than those 2 things it was a very pleasant experience. I will not hesitate to use the service again if needed as well as recommend the storage units to others.

However, apon getting ready to load the truck I noticed the cab of the truck wasn't cleaned out I found a half drank bottle of water under the seat and a half eaten bag of snacks behind the seat. I made sure the truck cab and box were cleaned out before I returned the truck with more gas than I started with. I was told I would be refunded $25 if the truck was returned clean which I haven't seen yet.

I am out of state and was trying to rent the unit online or by calling and none of my calls were ever answered and nobody ever called back. Emails were also not answered. Even though online it showed I had a reserved unit when my daughter went to the facility it was not. Luckily she was able to reserve a unit in person.

We arrived at the storage facility on Thurs., Aug. 19th at 5am to move items out and realized we needed assistance from the office as my college son had left the lock key at our house which is out of state. We patiently waited for the office to open. When the office opened my husband was informed he would need a locksmith because the associate doesn't cut locks; fine no big deal. However, when we finally had a locksmith come out and open the door for us and husband went back to the office to obtain u-haul truck rental there was only one person working and a line of customers had been formed. Apparently the second employee had showed up to work but left abruptly after realizing she left phone at her friend's car. Our initial goal of moving early was delayed but obtaining the truck rental was a nightmare due to shortage of staff and long lines. More staff is needed.

The only negatives I encountered were trying to get through to the office - I waited for over an hour for one of my calls only to be given the national U-haul representative that said she couldn't answer any questions for me. I was also disappointed that the carts that they leave to help move were never available even though we were the only people there at one point (found out people were taking them and storing them in their vehicles). This made moving harder since we had relied on having them.

We had a unit here for 1,5 years and for the most part things were satisfactory. In the last month we stopped by our unit several times as we prepared for a move. Multiple times during that month the hallway where our unit was located was completely blocked by piles of junk. Many other units where blocked including our own. To make matters worse we had trouble finding carts because many were buried beneath the junk. We told the staff about it and they said they'd notified the person but that they couldn't do anything about it. When my husband stopped by he saw people looting from the piles. It was clear they were looting and we're not the owners because of how they were talking about their finds. It made it clear how little the security measures actually did.

Also, we pulled into the garage thing and the was absolutely no signage telling you where the button to open the door again was located. I reported it to the lady in the office. 3 weeks later nothing was fixed, additionally, the elevator was broken, and I was not able to move my mattress by myself from the third floor. This was the day I returned to Ames, to move into my new apartment. I went to the office again, asking them for help. Both staff members were very rude ... it was Uhauls reposnobility to assist with this matter. So, I ended up sleeping on the floor. I would have found it appropriate that they would offer me to help me move the mattress in my car. I know things like that happen but this is not fair to me, paying full price for a dark unit while the elevator was broke. It was highly unprofessional from the staff as well.

I was then called by someone at the store that I had the wrong locks I needed to buy the locks at U-Haul. Since I had already spent the money on 2 locks I did not comply with request, but continued to get called about that. I had insurance on my items & felt my things were secure with my locks. You need to stipulate your locks are the only locks you allow.
