A rental should be a 24 hour thing. I am going through the process of disputing a payment as I had the truck for less then 24 hours. I see no reason I should even have to fight for this.

I waited forty five minutes while the location owner listened to an in-person sales presentation from a pair selling credit card processing services door to door — then another fifteen minutes while he signed up.

Customer service person at this location seemed overwhelmed. Had me call this central service representative because the contract wouldn’t go through on his side. This U-Haul representative on the phone (Sheila) was rude and did not exhibit good customer service skills. Although I had a reservation online, the entire process took over 30 minutes to finish. I almost just walked out and went to Budget to rent a truck. Not a positively memorable experience all in all.

I normally rent with another company, but because of the weather conditions, I chose a closer pickup location this time. The truck I rented was pretty new but had a cracked windshield. It was also buried in about a foot of snow and had to be dug out after I got there to pick it up. Also, the rental representative had a lot of trouble working the computer system. I actually had to call the Uhaul help number while I was there to help process my order. Other than that, by Uhaul standards, it was a pretty good experience.

When I went to pick up the truck, it took so long to process the order that it logged itself our and we had to start over. Consequently, I did not get the truck at the time stated on the invoice. When I returned it they did not process my return for a long time afterwards. I got charged an entire day for a two hour time overlap that was really only 20 minutes or less. I believe I should have that day credited to my credit card.

I returned my truck with a full tank, under my allotted mileage and ahead of schedule. However, the office was already closed, so I parked my truck in the lot and put my keys in the drop box. The next morning, I received an invoice for $684 over my estimate, stating that I had gone way over my allotted mileage and returned the truck with only a half tank of gas. I tried calling this location but no one answered, so I drove or there. Upon arrival, the customer service person claimed I had returned the truck with a broken windshield. I had him come outside with me and verify that MY truck was returned under mileage, had a full tank of gas and there was no broken windshield. The manager had to assist in getting the charge reversed (they had already charged my credit card for the $684) by calling U-haul while I was there. The manager was apologetic but mentioned that this wasn't the first time this had happened - perhaps that wasn't the best thing to tell an already frustrated customer, and perhaps the person doing the truck rental check-ins doesn't have the right skill set required for the job. Also, trying to be proactive, I paid three of my missed tolls online using the truck license plate number. But today I received an email and invoice stating I had unpaid tolls, plus an administrative fee. I tried to dispute the tolls since I had a receipt from the Illinois tollway stating I had paid them online, but the Uhaul website gave me an error message when I tried to submit the dispute form. So I had to call Uhaul customer service. The customer service agent entered my dispute information for me, but now I have to wait for a phone call back from the Uhaul dispute team to get this resolved. Overall, I've had a terrible experience with Uhaul for what should have been a simple $200 one-way rental. I don't plan to use Uhaul or recommend Uhaul in the future unless some serious revamping to your customer service approach is done.
