What is the Auto Transport /Vehicle Trailer HITCH HEIGHT from the ground to the bottom of the trailer coupler, so I can plan ahead and get the appropriate hitch. Thanks

-Gordon N Joczik 23/9/2020 6h30m17 am

Hi Gordon, You need a ball mount to raise your hook up to where the ball is no less than 18" above the ground. Or, no more than 24" above the ground. If you are going to be pulling a heavy trailer, try to get a rise closer to the 24". A light trailer closer to 20" above the ground. In either event, please check with a UHaul Center if you have any questions. Thank you

I have a 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe with a class 3 hitch what size drop down receiver do I need to tow a Uhaul 5' x8' trailer.

-Bill Uhl 20/5/2020 6h13m33 pm

I have a factory installed class III towing hitch installed on my 2015 Nissan Pathfinder. Is this the right ball mount? It does not specify the class this is for but I need a 2" ball.

-Anonymous 11/7/2019 4h15m36 pm

Hello! Please select a 2" ball mount that closely matches the trailer coupler height when level and that has a weight capacity that exceeds the gross trailer weight. To do this, measure the top of the receiver to the ground, then level trailer and measure from the bottom of the coupler to the ground, the difference between the two measurements will be the correct ball mount height needed. You will then need to purchase and install the 2" ball - U-Haul part 4944 features a weight capacity of 7,500 lbs and industry-leading safety cotter pin.

You can also opt to visit your local U-Haul Hitch Center for a free towing inspection. I hope that is helpful!

If I were to purchase a lock for the tow while utilizing a U-Haul 2 1/4" or 3 1/2" starter drop, what size lock pin is required? 1/2" and 5/8" hitch pin? Or, does U-Haul sale locks as I would rather lock the trailer on rather than deal with someone disconnecting the trailer and possibly driving off with it.

-Richard Gaines 27/1/2018 7h32m41 am

i have a 2017 toyota tacoma crew cab SR5 set up for towing but do not have receiver and ball for hitch. it is 6000lb. towing capacity . Which started kit would I need? I plan to rent your 12X6 foot trailer soon for a move and then use for pulling a travel trailer.

-Wayne 9/8/2018 8h23m46 am

Hello, Wayne! Please measure from the ground to the top inside portion of your 2" receiver tube. The difference between your measurement and the U-Haul trailer coupler measurement (18 inches) will be the necessary drop or rise needed. For more help, please see our article on How to Select the Correct Ball Mount for your Hitch or visit your local U-Haul Hitch Center. Thank you!

-Savannah 15/3/2018 10h06m42 am

If I were to purchase a lock for the tow while utilizing a U-Haul 2 1/4" or 3 1/2" starter drop, what size lock pin is required? 1/2" and 5/8" hitch pin? Or, does U-Haul sale locks as I would rather lock the trailer on rather than deal with someone disconnecting the trailer and possibly driving off with it.

-Richard Gaines 27/1/2018 7h32m41 am

Hi, Richard! The U-Haul 2" Starter kits are designed with a 5/8" diameter pin hole. Please see the U-Haul lock set part 3794DAT. Thank you!

do you offer hitches to fit 1,5" receivers?

-Zach 2/2/2016 7h53m02 am

My tow bar hitch is 12 inches off the ground, so would I need Towing kit that would set the ball @ 18'' above the ground making it a 8 inch up set up?

-Roger 20/6/2014 11h15m50 am

You need a ball mount to raise your hook up to where the ball is no less than 18" above the ground. Or, no more than 24" above the ground. If you are going to be pulling a heavy trailer, try to get a rise closer to the 24". A light trailer closer to 20" above the ground. In either event, please check with a UHaul Center if you have any questions.

–Ronald 6/20/2014 2:42:38 PM

How do I know if I need a 2 1/4 or 3 1/2 inch drop. Which does a U-Haul trailer require?

-Mark Clark 11/3/2014 7h01m12 pm

Our hitch pro writes: "For a safe comfortable ride the trailer should be set up to tow on a level plane, U-Haul trailer coupler heights when level are approximately 18 inches off the ground. However, before you tow it is always recommended to visit your local U-Haul center for a free tow inspection."
