I needed a small truck to move some recently purchased furniture for just a couple of hours. When I went in to rent my truck, I found out I'd reserved the wrong date. The Ames IA staff was very helpful in correcting my mistake and I was out the door in minutes, keys in hand and on my way. Thanks folks!!

Never was told I should do a pre-check. Didnt see the text until after I had driven to my destination. The Gas was lower than my contract said, again, did not realize that until after I was gone too.

I had an amazing experience at this uhaul center, the truck was super nice and clean and ran great! The staff members were really nice. Only thing that I'd suggest is not making it up to the customer to make sure the gas and mileage is correct. When I got into the truck the gas was at 3/4 til empty and it was marked to be at almost 1/8 full. I was in a huge hurry and running very late that day my phone was dying and I didn't get a chance to get pictures so I ended up taking the loss and paying for the extra gas that wasn't in there to begin with. I also had trouble with the app, it didn't register that I had a rental out. But overall I had a really great experience especially getting it last minute and having to extend my time.

App didn't work with the drop off and they seemed really busy with 4-5 pickups and only 1 person there. But it was a Sunday, and everything else was good. The rep there was really great once I was able to get help.

This location is EXTREMELY understaffed. I booked a cargo van for one day to move a desk that I had bought, and when I went to pick it up I tried going through the mobile checkout process. Once I started that, U-Haul's system told me that a van had not been assigned to my reservation, even though the system gave me a "reservation guarantee" through the process and even though there was clearly a cargo van sitting in the parking lot. I asked the one staff member that was working there for help, and although he was nice and helpful, he made no attempt to look at the online system on his end and try to figure out what happened. He just said, "I don't know what to tell you, we don't have any vans." I then called the U-Haul customer service line and they switched my reservation to a 15' truck for the same price as the cargo van and gave me a $50 refund for the "reservation guarantee." As I was checking the truck out via the mobile process, the staff member at this location eventually came out after he was done helping other customers to see if I needed anything. He then saw the cargo van sitting there and said to me, "Oh, why didn't you tell me there was a van out here?" 1) Shouldn't that be something you know? Or, at the very least are able to find out by checking the reservation system to see if a van had been checked back in??? 2) How am I supposed to know if that van was available for me to take or not? For all I know, it could have been reserved by somebody else. I have to go off the word of the staff member in front of me (who, again, is a perfectly nice dude but who is also making zero attempts to check anything in the store's system). Very disappointing and frustrating process.

Successfully scheduled and paid for everything online, and was reached out to confirming dates and times available by the manager. While dropping off my vehicle, I got a sense walking in and working with some of the staff that there was much needed training for a smoother operation. The rep I worked with didn't ask for my name, nor looked up my information, I instead had to write down my name and phone number on a sticky note and provided my keys, hoping it would get to the right person. The next day I did receive a call that my vehicle was ready by the manager I spoke with before, and he did apologize for how long it took as there was an issue at the facility that needed to be attended to. I arrived to pick up my vehicle with no manager in site and I worked with a rep who once again needed a lot of training, or at least needed to have someone shadow him while working. There was at least 3 times where he had to FaceTime the manager to confirm information for just my request, and while I appreciate him being thorough, with all due respect that's not how operations should be handled. I was honestly and still am scared if my hitch installation is going to be successful based on the way I saw how things were operating. The staff was all very friendly, but again, training can go a long way into changing things around.

The problem I had was the fuel and mileage were not correct. I did not take pictures to prove it. I was helping the attendant get snow and ice off the truck at -18 degrees. I knew I only drove 15 miles. The odometer showed I went 44 and was charged. Also, the gas hand did not match. My loss this time, but I will not get caught again. My generosity in helping cost me because I did not compare the paperwork I trusted someone else.

Rented 6x12 trailer. Worked excellent for my needs. Was not swept out, but wasn't really dirty. Tires were low. 4 tires should be close to 65lbs. They were at 51,49,32and 11lbs. Experience picking up and dropping off was fine.

I had terrible problems with book keeping. Paid monthly through my bank. Payments not credited to my account. Was told my bank checks were shredded with other returned mail. Spent a lot of time over many months trying to get them to fix the problem. New management came on board about two months ago and he helped me. He was helpful but up until his artival I was not getting any service. However, records are still wrong and I continue to get past due notices and extra charges. I moved out on November 26 and I see this survey says December 6. I put everything in a PODS unit which was picked up at uhaul on 11-27 and shipped to texas. Clearly U-Haul has a problem with book keeping practices.

DON'T LET CUSTOMERS RESERVE TRUCK PICK UP AND DROP OFF LOCATIONS IF YOU REFUSE TO LET US PICK UP AND DROP OFF AT THOSE LOCATIONS!!!! Uhaul is great at telling you to drive an extra 40 minutes to pick up a truck even though you reserved one at a different location. Then, they might not let you drop it off at your RESERVED location, instead asking you to drive even further, pay for more miles and gas, to return the truck to a different location on the day you're MOVING, which is the whole point of getting a uhaul. Y'all need to redo your system, seriously frustrating stuff. The employees at the Ames store were VERY kind and helpful, however

U box was not ready when I arrived to pick it up. I talked to two different people and could not understand I was picking it up , parking at my garage 4 miles away loading garage items to have garage floor redone and bringing back 8 days later. Why they did not have it ready is an unknown to me but almost missed a very important appointment waiting for it.

At the beginning of the rental I had asked to park a jh in the back of your lot for only a couple of days. It's was OK. Went back closet to time to make sure and was told no I couldn't. So I was lied to, that's why I left.

Facility seemed very secure, appreciated the option to drive in when weather was not agreeable. Allowing a month to month rental (instead of long term contract) was especially helpful as I was not sure how long I needed to rent a unit. Initial rental was quick and easy, ongoing rental payments conveniently made on line. Move out took about 30 seconds--much easier than expected. Merci.

We used the Uhaul storage in Ames, Iowa to store my son's belongings over the summer when he was not in school. The storage unit was clean and temperature controlled. It was easy to unload/load when needed.

Limited parking. The trash people leave in the "free" pile near front entrance was disgusting. Don't allow people to leave anything behind. Otherwise, nice facility.

I've Used the facility on Duff for the past 3 years to store and Move my daughters items in and out of Dorm/Apartments.they have been helpful and respectful. The place is always clean.

The people hanging out at night the go in to use the bathroom. I would not go at night. There was always broken glass in the parking spots. Also the weekend after the college move the trucks took up all but 3 spots so it made moving limited.

They worked with me when i had issues. My grandfather passed away unexpectedly and they worked with me to get a card to get in because i lived out of state and worked with me to clear it out while out was out of state and had been short on money. Its been a rrally hard time for me so i really appreciate the stress they took kff of my shoulders

Temperature controlled, cart corrals, indoor parking spots, bathrooms and cold high pressure water fountains on every level, good working elevator, and some windows to look out into the parking lot from. It has just about everything I could ask for. I did find the hours inconvenient. Since I work nights I really would have appreciated the facility opening at 6:00am instead of 7:00am.

Consider making the terms of renting more prominent in U-Haul's website. The distinction between "reserving" a unit and actually renting one is vague and not readily apparent. I had to burrow into FAQ's rather than access clarification in the reservation process to fully understand the limitations of a reserved unit. To secure a unit for sure I wound up renting it 2 weeks before actually needing it and then renting an extra month without the ability to get a pro-rated refund. Disappointing.

Location refused to weather treat ground by storage facility creating a severely dangerous loading and unloading conditions. Loading location in slight incline and so severely iced over, it was INCREDIBLY DANGEROUS. "We don't have enough salt" but they didn't even salt in front of their office doors let alone the storage facility where people are risking their belongings and safety. I marked that the no on "we're the staff friendly and helpful?" What I want to add here is - Great associates, rude management. Unwilling to work around weather conditions and made no safety accommodations. Facility was clean and the young man who checked me in was nice - deserves a raise having to work with that manager of his.

For whatever reason, they use the docks at the storage facility to park extra trucks, making it difficult to get in to load or unload. Also, they do not clear the snow and ice from the loading area. The staff was very helpful with any questions or problems we had.

I had an issue where the staff assigned me a storage unit and when I went up there were already locks on it and they weren't mine. I had reserved a 2nd floor storage unit back in October for move in Dec. 1. I had already unloaded items and was on second floor. I had to call the office and they said I had to come back in. I told them I am not coming back in the office I have already unloaded my stuff. There were no storage units in the size I wanted left on 2nd floor so I had to move up to 3rd floor. I was not super happy as I again reserved this in October. The staff was friendly but this was an inconvenience.

Staff was friendly and site was clean. The staff was always busy so getting ahold of them by phone could be frustrating since after around 7 rings it automatically transferred me to the 800 #. Lighting is in the hallways of the storage unit, not in the units themselves. This was extremely frustrating because they are set on a timer and are motion controlled. So when I was working in the unit and the lights went off I would have to work my way out of the unit and then run and dance around until the lights came on again. Other than those 2 things it was a very pleasant experience. I will not hesitate to use the service again if needed as well as recommend the storage units to others.

Only one person working. Long wait to get in unit. Trucks stored at the loading dock made us have to unload down a steep step instead of where we should have. Injured my knee trying to unload because of this. Pretty sure I'm going to need medical attention. Hope the swelling goes down so I don't have to go to the doctor. Just wish you wouldn't store empty trucks at the dock.

The truck drove perfectly, not too bad on gas. However, apon getting ready to load the truck I noticed the cab of the truck wasn't cleaned out I found a half drank bottle of water under the seat and a half eaten bag of snacks behind the seat. I made sure the truck cab and box were cleaned out before I returned the truck with more gas than I started with. I was told I would be refunded $25 if the truck was returned clean which I haven't seen yet.

So unorganized. I can't believe all I went through for only a three month rental. First my unit that was reserved was given away. Had to rent a bigger one. Next they gave me a unit and all the paperwork had someone's else's info on it. Next someone elses payment was on my account. Gave them move out date three times. Even went the counter to say moved out. Even gave them my lock the next day called to verify and they didn't have me marked as moved out. What a mess!!!

Random trash always by the loading doors. Same street people everyday hanging out in there unit. The only term I can use is, it was safe for my items but I myself didn't feel safe. Always over a 20 minute wait in the Uhaul office for service. To call uhaul ain't any better unfortunately.

The facility is excellent and very convenient. Renting the storage unit and getting the move out confirmed were not. I am out of state and was trying to rent the unit online or by calling and none of my calls were ever answered and nobody ever called back. Emails were also not answered. Even though online it showed I had a reserved unit when my daughter went to the facility it was not. Luckily she was able to reserve a unit in person.

The facility is well lit and very clean. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for staff. We arrived at the storage facility on Thurs., Aug. 19th at 5am to move items out and realized we needed assistance from the office as my college son had left the lock key at our house which is out of state. We patiently waited for the office to open. When the office opened my husband was informed he would need a locksmith because the associate doesn't cut locks; fine no big deal. However, when we finally had a locksmith come out and open the door for us and husband went back to the office to obtain u-haul truck rental there was only one person working and a line of customers had been formed. Apparently the second employee had showed up to work but left abruptly after realizing she left phone at her friend's car. Our initial goal of moving early was delayed but obtaining the truck rental was a nightmare due to shortage of staff and long lines. More staff is needed.

The customer service individuals at Uhaul in Ames were extremely helpful, patient and thorough in their interactions with us. Our check-in experience was amazing thanks to the worker who was very helpful and patient. The facility was very clean and well lit. The only negatives I encountered were trying to get through to the office - I waited for over an hour for one of my calls only to be given the national U-haul representative that said she couldn't answer any questions for me. I was also disappointed that the carts that they leave to help move were never available even though we were the only people there at one point (found out people were taking them and storing them in their vehicles). This made moving harder since we had relied on having them.

I don't like your website. I was never able to create an account. It made it difficult to work out issues with billing. But the physical space was good. Hours worked well and if my daughter was needing it next year, I'd use it again.

I wasn't going to write this but I've been getting daily annoying emails bugging me to write a review so here you have it. We had a unit here for 1,5 years and for the most part things were satisfactory. In the last month we stopped by our unit several times as we prepared for a move. Multiple times during that month the hallway where our unit was located was completely blocked by piles of junk. Many other units where blocked including our own. To make matters worse we had trouble finding carts because many were buried beneath the junk. We told the staff about it and they said they'd notified the person but that they couldn't do anything about it. When my husband stopped by he saw people looting from the piles. It was clear they were looting and we're not the owners because of how they were talking about their finds. It made it clear how little the security measures actually did.

The only problem I had was with the sliding door. Sometimes it would not open automatically when I was going out with a load, and I would have to go out the small door and swipe my card to get it to open. Such was the case the whole time I was moving out. This was inconvenient.

The whole process was simple and painless and getting into the building and unit was quick. I wish the halls were marked a little easier to find where you unit is located but we found it quick enough. I will honestly continue to use the storage options as long as need be. Felt much safer than previous companies I've used.

I understand that the building needs to be secure but punching your code in 7000 times is really difficult to do without setting off alarms. Also, we pulled into the garage thing and the was absolutely no signage telling you where the button to open the door again was located. Setting everything up online was extremely simple and is why I chose u-haul in the first place.

I had a really good experience overall. My only issue is that, being a solo hauler, I wasn't always sure that some of my stuff is not going to disappear while I'm moving things to and from storage and can't attend to it. It is natural for the facility of this kind to attract this type of attention, something to think about I guess.

When I got my storage unit the light was broken, and it was completely dark. I reported it to the lady in the office. 3 weeks later nothing was fixed, additionally, the elevator was broken, and I was not able to move my mattress by myself from the third floor. This was the day I returned to Ames, to move into my new apartment. I went to the office again, asking them for help. Both staff members were very rude ... it was Uhauls reposnobility to assist with this matter. So, I ended up sleeping on the floor. I would have found it appropriate that they would offer me to help me move the mattress in my car. I know things like that happen but this is not fair to me, paying full price for a dark unit while the elevator was broke. It was highly unprofessional from the staff as well.

One elevator & only a handful of carts was not enough on days that multiple people were moving things in/out of the facility. It would be helpful to have multiple elevators & carts for days when the facility is more busy. The sliding door near the elevator also almost always had issues opening.

The workers here in Ames deserve a raise for the work they were willing to put in even after store hours. I could tell they were under staffed but they held up the entire operation wonderfully. One worker was willing to help me an hour after the store closed so that I didn't get charged for an extra month of storage when I had moved out.

The staff spent some time activating my card and then when I got to my unit the alarm still went off. I wasn't told how to dismember the alarm or even told about the alarm. You have to re-swipe your card to enter every time which was super annoying if you have a lot of stuff in your car. Storage units were clean.

I did have a misunderstanding with the employees.Atthe time I rented the2 units they told me I needed 2 dial locks(since I was using two separate closets), which was fine.I went to our local hardware store & bought 2 locks (spending $18on the 2. I was then called by someone at the store that I had the wrong locks I needed to buy the locks at U-Haul. Since I had already spent the money on 2 locks I did not comply with request, but continued to get called about that. I had insurance on my items & felt my things were secure with my locks. You need to stipulate your locks are the only locks you allow.

the employees were very busy, it was very hot and humid, it was later in the day, on top of all of this, the employees were very helpful and made sure all my questions were answered.

The new facility looks great! I'm glad that even though the current hours are only store hours that the employees were willing to leave it open for longer and come back after hours to lock up,

It was impossible to actually talk to the Ames location in person. The location would never answer and I would bounce to a different person somewhere else. I had to drive location twice for questions.
