Good in every way
James B.Door was locked when I arrived to drop my uhaul off at 4:57 I'm just worried about getting a few for dropping it off after hours but I was right on time
Jaden S.The staff was extremely helpful and knowledgeable. The only improvement I would suggest is that if the equipment is returned early that you only charge for the time used. As a senior citizen I did not know how long it would take be to move my furniture so I rented it for 24 hours, however some nice people at the U-Haul storage area assisted me with the loading so I only needed the truck for 5 hours, but I was charge for the 24 hours. That is my only suggestion but I was satisfied with the service and the truck.

VALDIR C. | Expérience généraleI arrived before my 10am appointment on the 9th, which manager had scheduled for the 11th. Didn't finish the installation of the hitch and wiring until about 4pm. Said it would take "a couple hours". While I waited for it to get finished, employees slowly left for the day, including the manager, who had a birthday party to attend. Leaving 2 employees to both work on the installation and take care of customers. Not sure if this was a normal Saturday schedule or not but effected my whole day. They finished the job with minimal mess in my car, though my hood release lever was fell onto the floor, as I was driving home. Will try to get it to reattach to its normal position. I'm hoping this was just a one off and not a normal day at the Ames Iowa U-Haul store.

maria C.Staff at the location was very pleasant however it took me over 30 minutes in the office to get the vehicle I had reserved online. Part of the issue was the customer ahead of me, part was problems with the computer system. When I checked the vehicle back in the systems were completely down so I just dropped off the vehicle and keys. I'm looking at my contact which I can send you which states the per mile fee is $0.49, but on my receipt I was charged $0,79 per mile. No one answers the phone, is there a way I can get this adjusted? I had to go through my credit card company but I may need to. Additional amount is only $13,2 but it is a 60 %+ overcharge from the contract.

Rozlyn E.I won't recomend uhaul to anyone. The roof leaked on my property damaging it even though I had the insurance to protect my property they denied the claim costing me 7k in damages. I will never use uhaul again.

Dave B.Pulled return lane waited 10 minutes no one came. Found an employee sitting in a U-Haul truck in front of me and asked for assistance he said go inside. No one was inside for 30 minutes. Unhooked the trailer and took photos. Brought paperwork inside and the same employee that had been in the truck was now in the office. I gave him my paperwork and he said he'd “check me in†and i could go. He never did check the trailer in. U-Haul called me days later to inform me trailer was never returned and would be reported stolen.
Bart C.Facility seemed very secure, appreciated the option to drive in when weather was not agreeable. Allowing a month to month rental (instead of long term contract) was especially helpful as I was not sure how long I needed to rent a unit. Initial rental was quick and easy, ongoing rental payments conveniently made on line. Move out took about 30 seconds--much easier than expected. Merci.

angie f. | Expérience généraleWait time was long--not enough people working the desk. Some of the staff didn't seem especially knowledgable. That said, the staff was friendly and the person who finally wrote up my order was helpful and accommodating. But the price for my 10' truck for a local rental was exorbitant. It was advertised for $19,95 but the milage charge and insurance added up to $70 and that is after the staff reduced by estimated milage to try to lower the price. $1,19 per mile as an add-on charge when I'm paying for the gas is outrageous.
phillip M.I reserved a one-way uhaul. When I got to my location, the Uhaul people told me that this location (the only one within 60 miles of any others) was full and not accepting returns. The last four times I've rented from uhaul, they've tried to put something shady over on me(overcharged once, a second time an employee tried to refund an incorrect charge through shady means, which didn't work and ended up costing me money and then someone screaming at me on the phone that the drop off location is only a “preferred†option, despite the fact that no other return facility was in the area). We also rented a storage location for nearly a year). This last issue is my last interaction with Uhaul. I'll be communicating my experience to anyone who will listen and will likely never use your manipulative company ever again.

reece b. | Expérience généraleThe slowest worker that U-Haul must have had available was the guy who was chosen to work the front desk Saturday afternoon, August 5th. This gentleman was in no danger of ever catching a speeding ticket for working too fast as the line of people waiting for service grew like a tumor. In addition, it never dawned on him that maybe he should direct customers who may be returning equipment, to do so behind the store so they weren't unnecessarily waiting in line. Luckily, a nice, younger woman with glasses working at this location came into the lobby before several of us waited any longer and mentioned that if anyone had returns, that they "could park their equipment out back and leave the keys in the vehicle". Big thanks to her! As for the several male employees who walked through the U-Haul lobby with the ever-growing line being obviously apparent, maybe take a customer service lesson from your lady colleague. That's why the saying, "never send a man to do a woman's job" still stands to this day. You dudes who didn't do anything to direct the "traffic" sincerely suck--way to go. As for the guy in the back lot of this location with the long hair (don't know his name) you are cool as shit and thank you for your help. I appreciate you and your sympathy and you are not included in the "dudes" of the above statement. As for the entire U-Haul experience this "go-around", I hope to never have to use this company again--we'll see.
John S.I ordered 1 box and realized that we would need a second one. Was able to get it delivered on a Sunday. Both boxes moved easily to storage and to new apartment within a week! Also hired moving helpers with both moves and that was so helpful. Website and wait time on the phone can be a challenge but all worked out in the end.
LEIGH B.Temperature controlled, cart corrals, indoor parking spots, bathrooms and cold high pressure water fountains on every level, good working elevator, and some windows to look out into the parking lot from. It has just about everything I could ask for. I did find the hours inconvenient. Since I work nights I really would have appreciated the facility opening at 6:00am instead of 7:00am.

The distinction between "reserving" a unit and actually renting one is vague and not readily apparent. I had to burrow into FAQ's rather than access clarification in the reservation process to fully understand the limitations of a reserved unit. To secure a unit for sure I wound up renting it 2 weeks before actually needing it and then renting an extra month without the ability to get a pro-rated refund. Disappointing.

It's absolutely ridiculous that I have to spend 3 hours the day before a move to pick up a truck. There has to be a better system in place. You shouldn't be taking advantage of customers because you're one of the cheapest and most convenient business for moving.

Loading location in slight incline and so severely iced over, it was INCREDIBLY DANGEROUS. "We don't have enough salt" but they didn't even salt in front of their office doors let alone the storage facility where people are risking their belongings and safety. I marked that the no on "we're the staff friendly and helpful?" What I want to add here is - Great associates, rude management. Unwilling to work around weather conditions and made no safety accommodations. Facility was clean and the young man who checked me in was nice - deserves a raise having to work with that manager of his.

I had reserved a 2nd floor storage unit back in October for move in Dec. 1. I had already unloaded items and was on second floor. I had to call the office and they said I had to come back in. I told them I am not coming back in the office I have already unloaded my stuff. There were no storage units in the size I wanted left on 2nd floor so I had to move up to 3rd floor. I was not super happy as I again reserved this in October. The staff was friendly but this was an inconvenience.

The staff was always busy so getting ahold of them by phone could be frustrating since after around 7 rings it automatically transferred me to the 800 #. Lighting is in the hallways of the storage unit, not in the units themselves. This was extremely frustrating because they are set on a timer and are motion controlled. So when I was working in the unit and the lights went off I would have to work my way out of the unit and then run and dance around until the lights came on again. Other than those 2 things it was a very pleasant experience. I will not hesitate to use the service again if needed as well as recommend the storage units to others.

Injured my knee trying to unload because of this. Pretty sure I'm going to need medical attention. Hope the swelling goes down so I don't have to go to the doctor. Just wish you wouldn't store empty trucks at the dock.

Our son had just moved to Ames and needed somewhere to store his belongings while apartment hunting. The staff were all very helpful and the facility was clean, safe, and well lit. We will definitely use them again.

However, apon getting ready to load the truck I noticed the cab of the truck wasn't cleaned out I found a half drank bottle of water under the seat and a half eaten bag of snacks behind the seat. I made sure the truck cab and box were cleaned out before I returned the truck with more gas than I started with. I was told I would be refunded $25 if the truck was returned clean which I haven't seen yet.

Next they gave me a unit and all the paperwork had someone's else's info on it. Next someone elses payment was on my account. Gave them move out date three times. Even went the counter to say moved out. Even gave them my lock the next day called to verify and they didn't have me marked as moved out. What a mess!!!

The only term I can use is, it was safe for my items but I myself didn't feel safe. Always over a 20 minute wait in the Uhaul office for service. To call uhaul ain't any better unfortunately.
