The check-in process was quick if you do the paperwork online prior to arriving at the location. Recommend letting people know to clean truck and put pads back in plastic bags prior to retur to avoid additional charges. I found out via a sticker.Raymond N.

I've rarely had a pleasant experience renting a truck from this location. I was forced to use it today as other locations didn't have availability and continued that trend. Upon arrival the first employee I met didn't seem to know how self check-in worked and went twice to look for a key before finding another member of the staff. The second employee told me that I had to "push the orange button" on my phone. The "orange button" said "I have my key now" and at this point no one had found the key. I asked if he had the key and he repeated that I had to "push the orange button" and then accused me of trying to tell him how to do his job. I said that I just wanted to know if he had located the key before I pushed the button that said I had the key. He then literally turned around and just walked off. Thankfully at this point a third employee who was standing nearby saw me looking around in confusion and said "he has the key" to me quietly (with a look that said "I have to deal with this all day"). I said "he does?" and the guy said "yes, he has the key". I shrugged and pushed the orange button. The third employee then walked over to the second employee and said "he pushed the button" but received an answer that "I don't have time to deal with it." So the third employee went and found the key and finally I was on my way. Needless to say, that was some pretty terrible customer service and I did not come away happy. Even if employee the second was grumpy literally all he had to say was "yes, the key is over there" in answer to my query. I guess he just wanted to exercise some petty control over the situation or something. I'll be going back to the Takoma Park or Hyattsville locations in the future. I do wish I had gotten employee number three's name so I could have called and left a recommendation for him as the only one who knew what he was doing.JAMES F.

Overall, this is a very nice facility. My unit is in the new building which is super clean and modern, so that was really nice. But the online check-in process was a mess. I checked in online the night before and got my unit number and access code, but upon arriving to the facility, found it very unclear as to how I actually access my unit. There were 3 call boxes on the wall with no indication as to which one I needed to use. When I tried the call box that seemed to be the correct one, I got a message saying "access denied, not checked in" even though I already checked in online. Thankfully, the employee in the office was a HUGE help as she walked over with me and showed me that I first need to "check in" again by entering my access code into a different box, then needed to dial my code in again at the main call box to actually open the door. There were zero signs or placards that indicated this on the wall, so I would have never figured that out. She then walked me over to my unit only to find that it wasn't ready for move-in. The facility padlock was still on the door and the free disc lock that was supposed to come with the unit was not inside the unit. The funny thing is, I had already purchased a disc lock at the location I picked up my truck from from because they told me (incorrectly) that a free one does NOT come with my unit. The wonderful employee yet again took care of me and made sure I got a refund for the lock I had purchased earlier. So in other words, had I relied on the online check-in process and arrived at the unit after the office had already closed, I would have been TOTALLY screwed because I absolutely would not have been able to get into my unit. Again, the very friendly and helpful lady in the office saved the day for me, explained everything, and got me all squared away, so the overall 4 star rating is thanks to the great staff and the fact that the condition of the facility and unit is really nice. Everything would have otherwise been smooth but it appears there is serious lack of coordination and communication when checking in online (I had similar problems when I went to pick up my truck at another location despite already checking in online and opting for mobile pick-up). If the office/store weren't still open, this could have been a total disaster that would have left me stranded. Shout out to the wonderful staff member that took initiative to get me all squared away. She turned a frustrating experience into a positive one.Aaron H. | Online Move In

I chose the 5th St. NE location because the one I planned to use did not have the truck available when needed. The 5th St. location provided excellent service. The drop off area is off to one side. The person waiting to pick up the driver could not drive up to where you drop off. Not knowing this, we did not clean out the cab of personal items. Making the person who drove the U-haul, having to hand carry (Haul) too many items way to far to where a pick up person has to wait. And realizing we forgot one item, then had to run back to the drop off area. And the attendants are really rude and screamed at us for accidentally driving a personal car into the drop off area. Side mirror on truck was already broken when I picked up Truck given to me did not match document I signed and I had to go back inside to sign a new document Staff were not as attentive as I might have liked Staff misspelled my last name on my document (with some sort of other character besides the apostrophe that is supposed to be there), leaving me stranded in the parking lot trying to do an after hours return Staff misspelled my email and - when I called back to ask why I had not received an email, failed to verify that it was spelled correctly. As a newly created "Corporate Account" holder and long time Uhaul client, I believe it would be a wise and prudent decision to "gift" me a free rental of any vehicle of my choosing.Veronica C.
Generally the personnel at this location were wonderful, but upon returning the vehicle one worker gave me an incredibly hard time and suggested that he was going to charge me for damage that I hadn't noticed to the vehicle. I told him that I had pictures and he said, well if it didn't show it well enough, they would have to charge me. Later, one of the other personnel told me not to worry about it and that the other worker was like this with everyone and that I wouldn't be charged. Frankly, scaring your customers isn't a good way to encourage repeat rentals. As someone who lives in the neighborhood, I appreciate the convenience and quality provided by u-haul in the past. I feel like this one worker should be encouraged to be more positive to customers.MATTHEW E.

Make your app and signage clearer. I returned a truck after hours and was never told to leave the keys in a drop box. None of the signage in the lot indicated if there was a drop box or where it was. It also astounds me that you supposedly don't have spare keys for your vehicles?? Definitely not recommending U-Haul to anyone.Andrew S.

Had a horrendous time trying to check in my rental online; I even downloaded the app and still had issues uploading pictures. I changed my preferences to share my location and still online and the app told me I did not have my location on (I did) then it would not let me upload/take photos because of storage on my phone (which was never mentioned as needed in the app or online...and if I have enough storage to download your app why would I not have enough storage for less than 5 photos???). While I appreciate the option to self check in with my phone, I didn't even end up doing it through the app. online finally ended up working after 40 minutes of retaking photos multiple times, cleaning out my own photo reel, downloading an app, sharing and re sharing my location preferences.Frances R.
There is no room for improvement upon returning my vehicle the customer service agents was fantastic and not to mention the very attractive gentleman with the beautiful brown completion and strong cheek bones that completed my check in. He had the men and woman checking him out he is surely a good look for this location very professional and courteouse and not to mention easy on the eyes. The Store manager DOESN'T know the UHaul policies and DENIED me the rental on the basis my French driver's license was an invalid driver's license. He would not listen to anything I would say nor check the policies when he was clearly in the wrong - I had rented a van before from that same location without trouble and that did not make him think twice. I also checked on the UHaul website and that did not make him think twice. I was only able to use the service thanks to the presence of a friend that then became the driver, but that was greatly inconvenient. The rest of the service was good but his Ignorance and arrogance nearly spoiled ALL of my moving.Stephane O.

The power outage on 8/15 caused me to incur a 200 $change from the moving company I hired to assist with my move. Previous storage facilities I have worked with who have promised certain access hours have a generator in case utility outages occur. I understand the utility caused this outage but the storage facility is ultimately responsible for customers being able to access their belongings during the days and times as promised in the customer agreements. I was told I would have a lower level climate controlled unit and when I got there it was an upper level. Staff was not friendly and not helpful. The hours of access are ridiculous. I am SO VERY SORRY that I moved into UHaul. The movers were already there and I couldn't find another place. I am so unhappy with UHaul and my entire experience. The customer service at this location is deplorable. The staff is extremely rude, and the General Manager Osman is very disrespectful and short tempered with customers. I requested a lock cut, as I lost my key and I've had the unit for about six years. He told me that it will be a minute. When asked a time frame he said, "It will be a minute" and walked off. I came back approximately two hours later, and he was still unable to provide assistance. 1. The requirement to use the U-haul sold crescent lock is a scam and money grab by Haul and its dealers. I have had storage units for a decade using my own combo lock and never had a security problem. The idea that the required lock provides better security is a lie. 2. The movable ladder necessary to access my second level space constantly wobbled making it unsafe to access my unit. There was not another ladder available use. this is unsafe and reported to the facility. 3. The storage unit door did not close properly and align so the lock could be easily installed. This was reported as well. It took two of us on a the above rickety ladder to push the door enough so it would align and lock the unit door. Such a basic. Get it right. 4. We were only shown (1) elevator. Lots of waiting. this is a converted 3-story warehouse and if another elevator exists we were not shown it. More focus on making money and less on customer service by investing in necessary vertical transportation. Really not sure I'm not going to move back to the Cube Smart a few blocks away. I made the move to U-Haul because I already rent trucks from here and thought it would be more convenient. Was not the experience I had at all.Andrew M. | Premières impressions
