The U-Haul experience was unpleasant, not as a result of this store, but as a result of corporate policy that doesn't permit reservation of equipment. We believed we reserved a trailer from a much closer location to our home. Instead we had to drive 45 minutes to pick up an inadequate trailer. We will search for different shipping equipment providers next time we need to move.Duncan C.
The layout of the store isn't easy to navigate, and the wait time was very long. I booked a truck for 11:00 AM, and I did arrive early like 10:20. However, the time I actually picked up the truck was 11:30. This needs to be improved. The return process was relatively quick and a lot easier.Ho Min L.
Everything that could have been changed for my booking was changed. I asked for a 20ft truck and got given a 15ft, the pickup location was changed, no furniture dolly's available even though it was guaranteed 2 days prior and I had scheduled the booking over a month before. I will never use U-Haul again, I booked a trailer 6 weeks ahead of time and and the day before was told they don't have it. This cost me hundreds of dollars in canceled hotels and flights back home. Booked a 20' truck for my move more than 2 weeks in advance. When I arrive at my pickup time, I was told the truck is in repairs and they don't have another one anywhere in metro Vancouver. They didn't call earlier in the day or the day prior to let me know. I sat in their office for nearly an hour while they made various phone calls to find another vehicle. All they could find was a small cargo van, which turned what should've been a straightforward one-load move into an all day affair with no less than 6 trips back and forth. I received attitude from the people at the desk as though this whole situation was somehow my fault, when all they needed to do was let me know earlier so I could make other arrangements. Absolutely terrible service. I will NEVER use U-Haul again.Rebecca H.

Try honesty, honouring your word, not overcharging, no harassing emails and threats,reasonable response time for roadside assistance, stop the outright lying and misrepresentation to the head office and be completely upfront with your personal agenda for the rental long before you rent the equipment out. Absolutely the worst experience ever with ANY business I have ever dealt with (& anyone whom I share my experiences with agrees and is completely appalled with the way I have been treated). You have no idea how much bad publicity you have generated with this case. Although I have used uhaul frequently for the last 20 years , I will never again and will discourage anyone else from being subjected to this totally unprofessional attitude and culture experience at the Vancouver Marine Dr location. Help customer with instruction to allow their internet browser share its location. At the rush and confusion of the moment trying to self-check in, it could be challenging to figure out how to that while trying figure out how to check in Properly . I made a reservation for a truck at 12pm. I arrived at 11:30 to see if the truck is available. I was told it's not in the lot yet. I returned at 12pm, the truck still wasn't in the lot yet and they said the previous customer still has the truck and will be running 15 minutes late. I didn't hear back from them and went back at 12:30. When I got back to the counter, I was told then they do not have a truck for me. I told them I have a reservation for 12pm and then I was told the next available truck will be at 2:30â€¦I have my apartment's elevator booked from 1-3 and I kindly let the customer representative know. When it was finally sorted out, I got the truck at 12:45 and then I was told the dolly I reserved in early June with my truck reservation isn't available. This made my move extremely challenging and this process with U-Haul has been a negative experience. It made my move even more stressful. Time is of the essence, I paid my move out fee to ensure I could have uninterrupted access to the elevator. Because I received the truck late and a furniture dolly wasn't available, I wasn't able to complete my move within the elevator time frame. What's the point making a reservation early when the truck arrival was more than 30 minutes late and the equipment requested wasn't available? The only answer I received when I asked was that sometimes they just run out of furniture dolliesâ€¦overall poor experience and it's unacceptable.Calvin H.
Reservation dept found a auto transport quickly but the trailer was not prepared or safe. A solution was found but the time wasted was upsetting and costly. Flat tires are easily found if properly inspected.Herb R.

I find the signage to give directions very confusing. To rent a trailer I need to check in up front then drive around the back. For drop off there is no signage other than the ones that say go up front - which I do not need do to drop off the trailer ... ?Greg M.

I booked my service one month before and they called me just 12 hours before my pickup time and told me we don't have furniture dolly, How come a huge company like Uhaul can't manage these things, after 2 hours discussing they inform me we find the furniture dolly. This morning when I wanted to pickup the truck they again told me we don't have furniture dolly, I just told them I don't have enough energy to discuss to you guys. I would recommend it because it's close by and they have lots of stock. Not because of an outstanding customer service experience. The clerks on the counter just do the bare minimum and just seem to be going through the motions. Even though I have rented there many times, it doesn't get you any goodwill. I was less than an hour late for my drop off but was still charged another full day rental.JAMES D.

Unrelated to this location, our experience with UHaul was terrible and we will be recommending to people we care about to not ever use UHaul. Poor reservation was confirmed then later canceled without informing us. After hours of trying to work on a solution a poor substitute was arranged, but we continued to experience issues with execution of the alternate arrangements every step of the way.David L.

You changed my drop off location from one I could walk home from to one I had to the the bus and skytrain from. After I filled the gas and had to drive all the way to the changed location they charged me $17 to top up the gas. Totally unfair as I didn't change it. I would like my $17 retuned to my credit card. What a scam. I plan to post a google review etc. and make a formal complaint. This is unacceptable I will never use you again. I know nobody reads this so why ask. What a joke this is as you only post positive reviews and use the scores to promote. I am very familiar with surveys and NPS. so I know how this works. Your app does not work. I rented two vans over two weekends and struggled with it each time. The first time was after hours, and it took me almost 2 hours to finally get my van. There were two other people there also struggling. The second time, I struggled for about 45 minutes (the app kept going around and around in circles and logging me out), and then I went in and got help from a human. She rented the van to me quickly, but the app she texted me to log any damage before leaving also didn't work. I ended up going back in to get more help and was told to just take pictures with my phone and leave them in my phone to show when I dropped the van off again. All in all, the app wasted a lot of my time and was extremely frustrating. It is a good idea, but needs a lot of work to fix it!LISA O.

I was offered a fuel credit as part of the rental contract but when I returned the vehicle the employee that checked the vehicle failed to correctly read the gas gauge causing a 30 minute wait to get the problem fixed at the service counter. Would have appreciated that when I call the location that the location answers the call instead of being transferred to a Call Centre in the US. I left messages at Call Centre to be called back and no one did. Also, when there is a huge line up, bring in more counter staff to assist - like at a grocery store. I had a horrible experience with another location, Guardian Storage. The person there was very rude and unapologetic for her errors and omissions. She cancelled and moved my reservation to a location clear across town making my experience sour from the beginning, but the service at the pickup location helped smooth the relationship. She moved the location when she failed to accept her mistakes and used mechanical issues with the cargo van as an excuse and that was not true, it was a lie to cover her butt. I will tell other customers not to book a vehicle through Guardian and to go straight to the SE Marine Drive location to save themselves from the horrible people at Guardian Storage. The sign in process is very confusing. In this day and age with all the technology you should not have to use two different panels to disarm unit and then open door. I pointed out damage to the exhaust pipe on the vehicle. It was not properly secured and bent on the end but my concerns were not taken seriously. The smell inside this van was overwhelming and I had to drive with the windows down. It appears undiluted cleaner was used or cleaner was not rinsed. The van was experiencing some engine sounds that should have been picked up in maintenance.Warren B.

We had reserved a truck for pick up at Low Cost Equipment and were told they closed at 5pm. We arrived to pick up our moving truck at 4:40pm to find the building all locked up. When we called the number at Low Cost the response was sorry I'm on my way to Vancouver. We had a ferry reservation to the Gulf Islands to move my 79 year old mother and no moving truck. We were grateful that there was a truck available at the SE Marine drive location. While the truck wasn't all that clean and the steering wasn't great, we were just happy to get a truck.Brad B.

After 8 years I came in on Sunday to upgrade my unit from my 5x5x8 to a 10x10x8. I wanted to move everything over. I was told I had paid tell April 11 and didn't have to rush. I explained I don't want to pay for 2 units Tony said he couldn't do anything about that since we have already paid. We got charged on Monday the 14 for both units. Dealing with the office staff is a nightmare. The computers often don't work properly so the staff is doubling up. There is always a long wait. It must be company policies but there's a lot of "fine print" which aggravates everyone that walks in there judging by the amount of irate customers who leave. The parking lot has too many u-haul trucks parked in it, not enough customer loading/unloading and very narrow. They built a new wider sliding door to the storage facility but it's always locked from the inside. I do have to say that the facility is very clean and they try their best to keep bugs out of the lockers.Rita J. | Expérience générale

Lock unavailable & needed to wait additional 20mins for further assistance from a more senior associate. I was evicted for bringing my very well behaved dog into the facility and it was during the middle of the night when no one else was there. I was a very loyal customer for almost 3 years and had 24 hour access. The manager said he had warned us verbally before but I know nothing about this. In any event he gave me 72 hours to be out, took away my 24 hour access and I had access from 7 am to 7 pm. Well I work so this was not possible and I ended up having to rush my huge locker of stuff out onto the loading dock and was left there to move it all night because it is very difficult to find storage in Vancouver. I asked him for his bosses #, called and was told she was on holidays of course. Left my # to have someone calle and have had not a peep to this day a week and a half later. My only issue was the mice infestation. I had to dispose of a double mattress and expensive down filled hide-a-bed couch and anything fabric due to urine. Very unfortunate. Your storage facility was quite clean and tidy, if my experience with Uhaul had only involved the storage space I could easily offer a 5 star review; however, on either end of my experience with the storage was an extremely unpleasant experience with beat up, run down trucks, with inaccurate readings on fuel gauges and odometers. On both ends of my trip, fuel gauges AND odometers were not recorded correctly, loaded with 1/4 tank of fuel, and the difference was charged to me unless I had clear evidence showing the difference. Additionally, if you return a vehicle with less than 1/4 tank, they add an additional fee, which leaves the vehicles rented with 1/4 tanks immediately ready to add said surcharge. None of this even starts to address the condition of the rented trucks, which seem like a game of Russian roulette given how loose the steering and suspension were. I mentioned when returning the vehicle that the condition of the vehicle was quite poor, and the inspecting fellow grimaced as though it was a common complaint. Not only will I NOT be back, I will ensure that I share my experience with others. Decidedly the worst rental experience I've ever had.jair S. | Expérience générale

Business model is do messed up. I reserved a space that didn't appear to exist when I arrived with a truck load of things to store. It took an hour working with U-Haul staff to find the space and then find something closest to what I reserved. That wasted my time and uHaul',s time. Move in was confusing. The person I went to in the show room was less then helpful with helping me find my unit. I was walking around aimlessly with a toddler trying to find it. Ended up having to go back the next day for a lock. Once in it wasn't terrible. Although the 2 codes isn't that easy outside with a toddler running around and no help. I had so many issues getting my storage unit, I had booked one to be on the lower floor and checked in when I went to pick up a U-Haul. Then arrived to find out they had changed my storage locker only by going and finding the unit they assigned me locked. I went to the front and asked what was happening and they had changed me to unit on the upper level after specifically requesting and booking a lower unit level and paying more for that lower unit then an upper level unit. As majority of my items weighed over 200 pounds I didn't want to be lugging it up stairs for the move. I went to the front and asked why my unit was changed and requested that it be changed to a lower level. The staff I was dealing with seemed annoyed and told me I could have a different unit but have to pay an extra 80 dollars a month for it. I asked to make sure it was on the lower level and she said it was. When I went to load my stuff it in turns out the unit was STILL on the upper level. So now not only am I paying 200 dollars a month for a crappy unit I had to lug every item up the stairs and run around for an hour trying to figure out what was happening with my unit. Very very unimpressed with U-Haul and will be looking to move my storage elsewhere as soon as possible. If someone held a gun to my head and told me I had to say something negative about this experience, ... the only glitch I could possibly come up with is that when we changed to having my son pay for the unit, the contact info didn't change. I had $50 000 worth of valuables stolen from my locker here, and they had no video in the corridor the locker was in. They never respond to alarms when they go off, which is just plain incompetent and unprofessional. They were not friendly or helpful. All of the Marine Drive staff were helpful. One of your warehouse cleaning/maintenance staff at Marine Drive was incredibly friendly and very helpful. Don't know her name, but she is in her 50s (?) with light brown/blonde/grey hair. I saw her on several occasions, the last time was about 9am October 1st, 2021 in the East warehouse. I moved into a unit here on September 1st. On August 31st, I reserved a storage unit online. I received a confirmation email later that day, confirming that I had reserved a unit. When I showed up on the 1st, I was told that the booking doesn't exist, and they had sold out of the size unit I had reserved because apparently the units are first come first served. There was literally no point to doing an online reservation. I had to book a smaller unit instead, except the unit I originally reserved is somehow still in my name and is moved into, despite the fact that the reservation apparently didn't exist and someone else moved in there first. The card I was given to get into the building didn't work, but when I took it to the front desk they said it was totally fine. Spoiler alert, it wasn't because when I swiped it it said 'access denied, not signed in'. When I finally got into the unit, there were wadded up tissues in the corner. Also the alarm went off every few minutes, when our unit was both open and closed. We asked the staff if there was a problem and they said 'oh it just does that' and didn't seem to care. So clearly there's a problem with the alarm, so I don't feel safe at all having my stuff in there because I don't think anyone would notice if someone were to actually break in. All in all, absolutely would not recommend. I'm dreading having to go in and pick my stuff up next month, and I will be avoiding Uhaul in the future.Caitlin C. | Premières impressions

Despite being very clear when booking my order, and calling 2 days prior to my reservation to confirm again, U-haul continues to be incapable of following instructions and honouring contracts. I showed up to a completely different unit than the one I had booked, and had to fight to get an appropriate unit given to me as the staff's solution was to offer me units that would cost me more. During this frustration, a male staff member (the only one working front desk on 08/21/21 in the afternoon) decided to rudely insert himself into a conversation he was not involved in, and ask my husband to "calm down, settle down, and cool down" in the span of 10 seconds, while referring to him condescendingly as "buddy" and "bro". I then nicely interrupted and said "respectfully, as someone with a social work degree who has taken ,and taught conflict resolution and de-escalation strategies, you may wish to choose different terminology next time as telling someone to calm down, cool down etc is literally the opposite of what is recommended to de-escalate, and often only escalates the situation as you just saw." He sneered at me and sarcastically said "RESPECTFULLY, I didn't say any of those things" and proceeded to gaslight us, despite multiple others being witness to his words. This man needs to re-enter his training, or be removed from a front desk position where he deals with customers. Not professional at all, and has way to large an ego to deal with people in crisis. Murda was excellent in dealing with us, though also a point of frustration as when dealing with me (the calm wife in the situation) she had no solutions to offer me other than paying for a $200 unit when I had booked an $85 one, but when dealing with my husband was all of a sudden filled with potential solutions to give him. Solutions should always be offered, not simply because you no longer want to deal with a difficult customer. Customers should never be made to feel responsible for the failure of Uhaul employees, especially customers like myself who have gone above and beyond to ensure a correct reservation and even called multiple times etc which can all be tracked in your system. Finally, I have been waiting on a call from the general manager for almost a week now in regards to my move in, and have now been waiting for a call from him for 3 additional days in regards to this terrible move in experience. I am not sure why he is the GM if he is not capable of following through with customers, handling escalations etc. I had a terrible experience with U-haul 1,5 years ago when I rented a truck and storage while moving across the country, and thought I would try again now and give your company the benefit of the doubt, and a chance to prove me wrong. After this terrible experience I can safely say fooled me once shame on you, but fooled me twice shame on ME. I will never use this terribly rude, unprofessional company who does not know how to honour contracts ever again. I will also be communicating this to all of my colleagues, friends and family to ensure that not only do they avoid Uhaul, but also the SE Marine Drive location in specific.Kristy G. | Online Move In

Rented the box due to unilateral price increase on UBoxes due to "increased demand for u-boxes". When I arrived to move my foods from the ubox to Storage, the boxes were in the parking lot, 3 feet below the entry doors. In addition, the door was 'out of service' so the contents of our home could not fit into the building. The GM who sold me on moving my contents into storage was "unavailable" so the manager told me to hire people to lift the contents into the building. Incredible. One employee, in obvious disgust with UHaul said "they don't care if they lose customers because UHaul are so busy". I believe it. End result, u increased the price on my u ones, the boxes were moved back into the facility and your extorted price increase will apply on all 5 boxes. This is after paying UHaul over $5000 for their services to move our family goods. The ubox part of your business is separate from the storage and from the truck rental. No one knows about facilities at the other end and the customer is mislead. I will be contacting CBC Marketplace to file a complaint. I will also be working with a lawyer to get this resolved. This whole process of dealing with UHaul has been a terrible experience. There is a complete lack of customer focus. You have all my goods, no accessible storage and are increasing prices. The front staff do the best they can, but there are a lot of demands and it is hard for them to focus on you when they have multiple colleagues asking questions in the middle of them serving you. Even though I have been a client before, I still had some troubles understanding the new system and the staff did not explain the process at the desk. I made a reservation for a locker, when I arrived they told me the locker wasn't available as they are first come first serve. That strictly defeats the purpose of a reservation. I hauled a trailer of belongings from another province and relied on the reservation on my arrival. As a result I was offered very small or quite large at different prices. I'm currently in a large locker for my 1 month free period and will be moving to another storage company if the storage locker I expected doesn't come available, or if my quoted price isn't honoured. Also the contact information that needed to be filled out with secondary contact was overly onerous and nonsensical. One thing that could be improved was communication around the complimentary lock. When going through the rental process online it stated I was to have a lock left in the unit, but when I got there no lock was present. After checking with the front desk it turned out they were out, and I had to buy one to lock the unit. We arrived shortly before closing and the staff were very helpful, patient, and friendly, especially since we hadn't yet booked our unit when we arrived. Accessing our unit was fairly straightforward. The one downside of this location is there's no elevator to the 2nd floor - it's about 10 steps up which doesn't sound like a lot unless you're moving a 3-seater couch like we were.
