I recently rented a 10-foot U-Haul moving truck for my relocation from San Diego, California to Jacksonville, Florida. The scheduled pickup date for the equipment was December 4, 2024. The reservation was made in person at U-Haul Moving and Storage of Miramar, located at 9650 Camino Ruiz, San Diego, CA 92126, approximately one week prior to the pickup date. The total cost of the 10-foot rental truck, including taxes, amounted to approximately $3,500. During this transaction, I provided the agent with a receipt from a previous U-Haul rental, which I had made in December 2022 for a 15-foot truck and a tow-behind vehicle dolly for a total cost of $2,239.49, which I had rented from Jacksonville, FL to San Diego, CA. The agent, in a rather unprofessional manner, responded by stating, "Sorry, this is California." I then inquired about possible military discounts, only to be told, "We don't discount our trucks." After accepting the rental price of $3,500, I proceeded to finalize the reservation. However, once back home, I visited U-Haul's website and subsequently made a new reservation for a 10-foot truck at Associated Storage, located at 9343 Kearny Mesa Rd, San Diego, CA 92126. The total cost of this new reservation was $2,766.48, which was over $700 less than the initial reservation. As a result, I canceled the original booking. Following the reservation confirmation, I received a text from an unknown number about U-Haul's "Loadshare" program, which involves transporting a U-Box trailer between locations in exchange for monetary compensation. Given that my route passed near both the pickup and drop-off locations, I opted to participate in the Loadshare program, not only for the financial incentive but also to assist an unknown family or individual by delivering their property. On December 5, 2024, when I picked up the U-Box trailer in Yuma, Arizona, I encountered minimal staffing at the U-Haul hub, resulting in a 30-minute wait to be attended to. An additional 30 minutes were spent completing paperwork and hooking up the trailer. The Loadshare contract clearly stated that U-Haul does not reimburse for fuel expenses, which I initially did not foresee as problematic. However, upon comparing my fuel costs, I found that hauling the trailer over three days cost me $301,16 in gasoline, while the five days without the trailer only cost $307.03, including the fuel needed to return the truck. This experience has led me to conclude that the $500 Loadshare incentive does not justify participating in future opportunities of this kind. Upon reaching the designated drop-off location (as per the contract), I arrived at the equipment return lane and notified the staff via the provided Loadshare contact number. I was instructed to unhook the trailer and take a photograph of it in the lot. However, as I began to unhook the trailer, a staff member informed me that I was at the wrong location and needed to proceed across the street to drop off the U-Box at a different facility, which was not indicated in the contract. Upon arriving at the correct U-Box facility, I found that there were no clear markings or signage directing where the drop-off should take place. The storage facility had an open bay door with a through lane, so I decided to pull into the bay and unload the U-Box. Fortunately, Mr. Trevor Gregories was present and provided assistance with the unloading process and paperwork, enabling me to complete the drop-off promptly. On December 9, 2024, I encountered an issue with the rental truck's key, which required contacting U-Haul's roadside assistance for help. I was informed by the operator that any assistance would incur a minimum fee of $200. Given the cost, I decided to forgo the service. Overall, my experience with this rental has been subpar. Upon arriving in Jacksonville and returning my equipment on December 12, I was greeted warmly by the agents at both the storage location and the equipment return site. Like Mr. Gregories, these agents were professional, efficient, and pleasant in their service, which I greatly appreciated. As a long-time and loyal U-Haul customer, having completed at least five previous moves with the company, this experience has led me to reconsider future dealings with U-Haul. As an active-duty military member with more moves on the horizon, I will carefully evaluate other self-moving rental companies before making a decision regarding future rentals.

The truck outside and inside were filthy. The floors were full of dirt, there was trash in side the truck that I had to throw away. I was not told that one way was not $19.95. it took forever to get the paperwork, and then I had to take photos of everything before and when I dropped off the truck. Between picking up and dropping off I wasted an hour and 30 mins of my time. It use to be so easy and quick. Why did they change the process
PAMELA MReturning is a little confusing
kimberly wGreat customer service!
Amin FStaff was great, but mobile check in was awful. It took almost 30 minutes to get through…very frustrating. Additionally, the door to the vehicle was stuck to the new paint. It took us fifteen minutes and three people working to open it. I’d be unlikely to rent again.
