Booking a truck with uhaul is essentially a complete disaster. I'd like to preface with the fact that everyone I spoke with at uHaul were kind and courteous. All of them were just trying to help out when they realistically had no tools with which to help. The truck was also modern, clean and worked fine for the trip. But wow, does it set an new record low for my experience with a company. It has me absolutely dreading moving again and making me highly consider just selling everything I own and essentially wearing the clothes on my back since that would be easier. Let's breakdown how things failed each step of the way. I needed to move about 2 hours away from where I lived. Knowing that, I went online and reserved a truck a month in advance at a local convenience store. Everything went smoothly. At no point was I told that my truck wasn't reserved. I then about 2 days before get a text message saying my truck rental has been moved to a place where they can guarantee availability about 20 minutes away from where I live. Ok no big deal. But when I follow the link they provided me to review and accept the changes, I'm presented with two options. Keep everything exactly the same with the pickup location, or choose the further away option. Why would anyone choose the further away option and make moving more stressful? I kept things as they were. The next morning, I get another text message saying essentially the same thing. Except the truck is now about a 55 minute drive away. At this point, I don't trust what I'm being told as now the location has been moved to over 55 minutes from where I am. Again, this is all a day before moving. It's worth noting that when I decided to call uhaul l and am first sent to someone who can't help, but they transfer me to someone who can. I'm then told that the previous truck is no longer an option, and only this truck 55 minutes away is the closest option. I'm near the GTA area. I find this wild, so I ask why that is and am then told that uhaul has only so many one way trucks (ones that don't return to their original destination) and they actually don't have any in my area really ever. This just begs me to ask more questions. How was I able to reserve at a location a month ago knowing that this location doesn't get any one way trucks? Why was I given the 'option' to choose between two locations when realistically there was never a truck or going too be a truck at my selected location? Why is this all happening less than 48 hours before I moved? If I had adequate time, I could have booked with another more reliable company or sorted out another solution. I was given extra kms to drive the truck, but they didn't cover the full new distance back to my place, nor my time or the gas money. And since my distance to my new location was 2 hours, I spent basically double the amount of time travelling that day then I expected to. It's baffling how many points of failure there are here. It's beyond evident that uHaul has a logistical and distribution problem if there are no trucks. If you take anything from this review, I recommend having a back up plan or recommend highly that you consider booking with another company. Uhaul isn't worth the hassle or the unneeded stress.Ethan G.
