Recently had one installed on my 2021 Colorado. Will this unit works automatically when I depress the brakes when the trailer is plugged in. I went out for the first time with it and the trailer brakes did not seem to come on when I depressed the trucks brake. It worked fine if I pressed the red manual button. How do I get it to work automatically.

-Jeffrey French 20/6/2023 5h13m34 am

Hi Jeffery. This sounds like the red brake sense wire on the brake control is not receiving power when the brakes are depressed. Let us know if you have any further questions.

Just installed and all seems ok, but the brake lights on my truck seem to stay on even when the truck is off. Any ideas what is happening?

-Matt 12/2/2023 2h17m55 pm

Hi Matt! There are some install tips on your install sheet. A few that might be helpful, Wire color codes vary by manufacturer. Be sure to wire by function only, Some late model Ford / Mercury trucks and sport utility vehicles have two or more stoplight switch wires. For proper operation, use the light green wire. The other wire is red with a green stripe. This wire goes directly to ground when not in use. Splicing into this wire will short circuit your brake control and possibly destroy the unit. For Chevrolet vehicles 1999-06: If your vehicle does not have the towing package, only the ground and stoplight switch will be active in the Plug-In Simple!® connector. The electric brake wire and 12-volt power lead will be terminated outside the firewall. These will have to be routed to the trailer connector and battery on the vehicle. There are a few more, listed on that install sheet.

I plan to tow an auto trailer through British Columbia with a 15 foot truck. Due to the weight of the loaded trailer (over 6160 lb) the province requires a braking system that can be activated independently of the towing vehicles brake pedal. Do you have anything like this? Merci.

–Joseph 1/15/2016 3:59:42 PM

I have installed this brake controller and all works well, the E1 light only lights up when I press the brakes other than that there is no lights on the display. I hope this is what is supposed to happen, as I have not yet had a chance to test it with a trailer. However yesterday I came outside and my brake lights were on (car was off) , I looked the brake controller and it had an E1 on the display. I pressed the manual override button and the tails lights and the display turned off. Any thoughts as to why this could have happened?

-Kevin 14/5/2015 10h32m03 am

Once installed your 13509 brake control will show "E1" on the digital display, this indicates that your trailer is not connected.

Please visit your local U-Haul center for an inspection and or possible replacement of the 13509 brake control.

Merci.

The U-Haul auto transport trailers are equipped with a surge brake system. Thank you for choosing U-Haul!
