Having moved around quite a bit, we've rented our fair share of trucks, and let me tell you, some of those experiences have been pretty rough. But this U-Haul rental? It was hands down the worst ever. Seriously, I doubt I'll ever use U-Haul again after this. First off, they booked me for mobile check-in instead of a proper counter check-in, but didn't give me any heads up about what that meant. So after a 5-hour drive, we pull up expecting to check in quick, like U-Haul promises. Nope! Turns out they couldn't find my reservation at all. Why? Because 5 years back, my hubby and I rented a truck with my number and his email/credit info. This time, I set up a new account with my email and a different credit card, and the only thing that stayed the same was my phone number. For some bizarre reason, they decided to link that number to my husband's account. What if that person happened to be an ex or someone I don't even talk to anymore? What if I'd changed my number? Why would you mix accounts when I literally made a new one for this reservation? After an hour on the phone, something like 20 sign-in tries, and a gazillion verification codes, the rep finally figured it out. So, now we had to go through the whole photo and license scanning rigmarole that could've been done ahead of time. Seriously, if you wanna confirm who I am, just ask for a selfie! But no, we were stuck doing all this on moving day. Finally, after 1 hour and 45 minutes, we get the truck. Oh, and the rep wasn't even going to change my pick-up time. I had to request that since we got there on time, and it wasn't our fault it took forever to check in. Now, let's talk about dropping it off. Another lot with no one around. You'd think drop-off would be easier, right? Nope! After going through all the pics and U-Haul's requirements, I was about to finish my drop-off when bam! A pop-up says I owe an extra $56 because we went over our mileage and returned the truck with less gas. First off, we had 15 miles left to go, so definitely didn't go over our mileage, plus we returned it with a quarter tank more than when we picked it up. I refused to pay, so I called customer service again. After explaining, I asked for a text or email confirming we dropped the truck off because I wasn't paying that ridiculous fee. The rep sent me a text saying "he spoke to me about the situation", but that didn't prove anything, so I had to walk him through what I wanted him to say-something like "the customer dropped off the keys at such and such a time, and the truck's been returned." The next morning at 7:15, I get a call from some lady asking why the truck hasn't been returned. I tell her it has and start explaining, but she literally hangs up on me mid-sentence! I called back asking for someone from the location we dropped off to give me a call. A few hours later, the manager called and admitted they were wrong about the mileage and since we didn't go over, they'd "give us the benefit of the doubt" about the gas. Benefit of the doubt? You had the pics showing we returned it with a quarter tank more, so there was no doubt at all! They're super quick to hit you with extra charges for every tiny thing, but do you really think they'd ever consider giving a refund if you bring the truck back with more gas? This was the worst experience ever. U-Haul made our moving day way more stressful than it already was. If you absolutely have to rent a U-Haul, steer clear of the mobile check-in. What a total disaster. Never again, U-Haul!
